It's believed the riots could have been sparked by the incarceration of former president Jacob Zuma.

Following the riots, hearings were conducted in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal to probe the cause of the attacks and killings, as well as the alleged lapse in law enforcement for failing to detect and quash the unrest.

Eyewitnesses, various stakeholders and affected parties presented their reports and evidence.
