Registration hiccups at Walter Sisulu University

EAST LONDON - The Walter Sisulu University’s management says it's all systems go for teaching when the academic year begins on Monday.

But damning allegations have been leveled against the institution by would-be students who applied, were accepted and paid their deposit to secure their spot.

Only, when they turned up to register, they were told they hadn’t made the cut.

A big part of registration problems has been fueled by the late release of last year’s results impacted the National Student Financial Aid Scheme's funding applications.

Over 70 percent of students at the university rely on NSFAS funding.

The university says it’s hard at work to resolve the situation and is confident that this won't interrupt the start of the academic year.

The institution says it received over 500,000 applications from students wanting to study at its various campuses.

But just 30,000 students will be in class when learning begins on Monday.
