The new legislation provides a framework for state organs to acquire property in the public interest, with strict guidelines to ensure fair compensation.
Under the law, authorities must first negotiate with property owners, and have attempted to acquire the land via reasonable means.
Land can only be expropriated as a last resort.
According to government, this will ensure a transparent and just process aimed at promoting inclusivity and access to natural resources.
President @CyrilRamaphosa has signed into law the Expropriation Bill which repeals the pre-democratic Expropriation Act of 1975 and sets out how organs of State may expropriate land in the public interest for varied reasons. https://t.co/8KLTdkjBZm
