Outa has also slammed the punishment meted to Tim de Maayer, the doctor who blew the whistle.

"We are happy that the department of health decided to go and address the issues at Rahima Moosa Hospital, but we're a little bit concerned that it took Dr Tim de Maayer to pen down all the challenges at the facility and he got punished for that," Outa's Ali Gule said.

"Because we are aware that at a later stage, he was suspended for doing the right thing, for exposing what was happening on the ground there.

"I think the department should have been grateful and say thank you to him for bringing to attention, things that are happening at the hospital and also apologise to him for all the trouble he got himself into for doing the right thing."
