RAF on a battle collission with lawyers

JOHANNESBURG - The Road Accident Fund is on a battle collission with lawyers.

The entity has approached the Legal Services Ombud, to investigate lawyers who may have acted unethically or illegally.
CEO Collins Letsoalo says they decided to approach the Ombud, Judge Siraj Desai,
because of their unhappiness with how the Legal Practice Council had dealt with their complaints.
He was chatting last night to JJ Tabane on Power to Truth last night.

However, Professor Hennie Klopper, Emeritus Professor at University of Pretoria and Legal Practiioner, says blaming lawyers for the Road Accident Fund's problems is disingenuous.

He says the crisis at the fund can be attributed to the abnormally high incidence of road traffic accidents.

“I have listened to what has been said about this whole system and I think blaming the lawyers for the problems is disingenuous. The culture of litigation within the RAF was created by the RAF own policy. You had to sue RAF for them to make an offer. The statistics of the number of attorneys who have been disbarred equates to 20% of the number of attorneys. Not all disbarments are a result of dishonesty.”
