Nulane fraud trial | Defence disputes granting of indemnity

BLOEMFONTEIN - The decision to indemnify a Free State government official implicated in state capture stole the show in the High Court in Bloemfontein on Monday.

Shadrack Cezula is at the centre of a R24.9-million contract paid by the provincial Agriculture department to Gupta-linked company, Nulane Investment, back in 2011.

Now, defence attorneys are asking why Cezula was granted indemnity and are questioning what the National Prosecuting Authority got out of the deal with him.

In what is the first state capture trial following the Zondo Commission report, all eyes are fixed on this case to set the tone for future prosecutions.

The trial resumes on Tuesday morning, with Mtolo back on the witness stand for further cross-examination.
