PRETORIA - Thabo Bester is legitimately South African and deserves an ID book.
That’s according to Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi, who says the department has determined the convicted rapist and murderer’s true identity.
Motsoaledi says the death certificate issued after Bester was wrongfully certified dead by a Free State pathologist is automatically annulled.
Motsoaledi says only the US government can determine the authenticity of an American passport with the name of one Tom Williams-Kelly, which Bester had on him during his arrest in Tanzania.

The minister says there’s no evidence that Bester and Magudumana officially exited South Africa.
But he is not ruling out the possibility that some delinquent Home Affairs officials could have assisted the pair to skip the country.
