DURBAN - A power struggle is playing out at the top level of the SAPS.
And there are fresh concerns that the Independent Police Investigative Directorate,
is being used to settle scores.
The police watchdog has launched an investigation into KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner
Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
It cited Police Minister Senzo Mchunu as a complainant in the probe.
Then, it hastily issued a media statement to exonerate the minister.
Mkhwanazi told the committee he found out about a high-level smear campaign against him last year from an alleged associate of the minister.
Mchunu has denied any involvement in investigating Mkhwanazi but stopped short of revealing what action he would take against IPID for its so-called error.
- eNCA senior reporter Dasen Thathiah has the details.
