JOHANNESBURG - Eskom has a new Board.
The question now is whether it’ll be able to keep the lights on.
The shake-up includes a medley of expertise and skills ranging from engineering, accounting to energy policy and more.
For the first time since 2018 all 13 posts have been filled while Andre de Ruyter remains CEO.
Meet your new Eskom Board tasked with keeping the lights on and hopefully putting an end to rolling blackouts:
- Mpho Makwana
Mpho Makwana returns as chairperson. He holds a Bachelor of Administration and served as non-executive director of Eskom between 2002 and 2011.
- Dr Busisiwe Vilakazi
Dr Busisiwe Vilakazi is the Head of Research and Innovation at SITA.
She’s also a former senior researcher at the CSIR. She has experience and skills in ICT research, innovation and digital transformation.
- Lwazi Goqwana
Lwazi Goqwana is an engineer with 25 years’ experience in manufacturing, construction, financial services, logistics, energy and government services.
- Clive le Roux
Clive le Roux is the current chief nuclear officer at Eskom and has spent the last 10 years as a consultant for the ailing power utility.
- Fathima Gany
Fathima Gany has been a finance professional for over 20 years.
She’s registered with the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants.
-Ayanda Mafuleka
Ayanda Mafuleka is a chartered accountant and the CEO of FASSET. She’s the former CFO of the National Credit Regulator.
-Mteto Nyati
Mteto Nyati holds a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He’s the former CEO of MTN and a current executive at Altron.
-Dr. Tsakani Mthombeni
Dr. Tsakani Mthombeni is an executive for Sustainable Development at Implats and has a BSc, MSc and PhD in electrical engineering.
- Leslie Mkhabela
Leslie Mkhabela has an LLB and is the director and chairperson of Mkhabela Huntley Attorneys. He’s a member of the Black Lawyers Association with expertise in restructuring of state-owned assets.
- Dr. Claudelle von Eck
Dr. Claudelle von Eck is an organisational development and change manager. She’s the former CEO of the Institute of Internal Auditors of South Africa.
- Tryphosa Ramano
Tryphosa Ramano is a chartered accountant, corporate governance expert and strategist. She has experience in financial services, manufacturing and aviation.
- Bheki Ntshalintshali
Bheki Ntshalintshali is a former trade unionist and was elected as general secretary of Cosatu in 2015.
The new board's mandate is based on an existing shareholder compact, which will be reviewed to address rolling blackouts and power supply.
