JOHANNESBURG - ANC Secretary-General, Fikile Mbalula, is calling on the Youth League to challenge the mother body.
He says its role is to lead the fight against the struggle of young people on the streets.
Mbalula was delivering the keynote address at the Peter Mokaba memorial lecture in Bloemfontein.
"Gathered here in this hall you are the forward brigade that is expected to explain to the youth what the ANC will do for them. It does not mean because we are in power you can't occupy the streets and lead struggle of young people... when the ANC agreed to autonomy of the youth league it was not delivered on a silver plate," he said.
"Autonomy allows you to think and to be militant, the ANCYL's role is to challenge the ANC with ideas."
