Mawela condemns vigilante attacks in Gauteng

JOHANNESBURG - Outgoing Gauteng Police Commissioner Elias Mawela says vigilantism has given him sleepless nights.

He says communities should stop taking the law into their own hands and instead work together with the police.

After 39 years in service, Mawela is retiring.

As police commissioner for one of the most dangerous provinces, he says attacks and crimes are becoming more and more violent.
