Lusikisiki suspect charged with murder

LUSIKISIKI, Eastern Cape - The case against a man accused of killing 18 people in what is now known as the Lusikisiki Massacre, has been postponed to 15 October. 

The incident took place at two homesteads on the same street.

Fifteen of the victims were women.

Provincial Police Commissioner in the Eastern Cape, Lieutenant-General Nomthetheleli Mene said, "I am sure we have got the correct person. I cannot dwell much on the case because the case is in progress but I am positive that we've got the right person."

"Because the investigation is still continuing but I can safely say that it is more than three suspects that we are looking at, not including this one. It might be more."

Amampondo King Daluxolo Sigcau showed support for the family members at the court.

"I'm here at the Lusikisiki Regional Magistrate's Court to listen and witness what is actually going to happen and also to see, the gentleman that is suspected to be the one who had killed so many people," the king said.

"There is a lot of fear because the residents of this area, Ngobozana specifically, are really not happy. They are scared because what has happened there is really shocking."

"I think trust needs to be restored by working hand-in-hand with the police and using the number that is used when reporting the crime."

Lambasi Amampondo Community Chief Mthuthuzeli Mkwedini lost his brother in the massacre and represents more than 10 of the family members who will be buried on Saturday.
