Life Esidimeni inquiry continues on Monday

JOHANNESBURG - The inquiry into the Life Esidimeni tragedy continues on Monday and senior officials from the Gauteng Health Department are expected to testify this week.

They include former Gauteng Health MEC, Qedani Mahlangu, Dr Makgabo Manamela and Dr Barney Selebano.

144 psychiatric patients died between 2016 and 2017 after being moved to under-resourced NGOs in the province.

The inquiry has heard testimony from family members of the victims, NGOs and pathologists who performed postmortems on some of the patients.

The inquest was set up to determine whether any Gauteng Health official, or NGO owner can be held criminally liable for the deaths of the patients.
