JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng ANC has received and accepted David Makhura's resignation as Gauteng Premier.
Provincial spokesperson Lesego Makhubela says that Gauteng ANC Chairperson, Panyaza Lesufi, is expected to take up the reins on Thursday.
The party has hailed Makhura as an exemplary leader.
"Well on Thursday there will be the election of a new premier. So all MPLs will come to the legislature to elect the new premier.
"The African National Congress has expressed itself on its chairperson, that the chairperson will then take over the baton in what has been a very seamless smooth transition," Makhubela said.
Following the party's provincial conference in June, the party asked Makhura to vacate the office.
He had previously indicated that he would not be pursuing any further leadership positions in the province.
Makhura was elected in 2014 after former premier Nomvula Mokonyane took up a ministerial post.
