Justice For Cwecwe | Police minister slams handling of Cwecwe case

MATATIELE - Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has slammed the handling of the case involving a 7-year-old girl who was raped allegedly on school grounds in Matatiele 2024.

The case has faced significant investigative challenges with the case baring multiple transfers between investigating officers.

”One of the reasons are that the case was first handled by an officer at Matatiele Police Station before being transferred to a brigadier at the Provincial Office,” he says.

It was later assigned to another investigating officer, meanwhile, the docket could have been better prepared.

Due to these complications, Mchunu says the police have now reinforced the investigative team with a dedicated officer to ensure a more thorough probe.

Another hurdle in the case was the DNA evidence.

According to the minister the initial forensic testing conducted on the victim did not detect foreign DNA, making it difficult to identify a suspect.

However, authorities have since identified three persons of interest, and further DNA testing is underway.

Despite the challenges, Minister assured the public that thorough investigation is now fully underway.

“I can assure you that we are consulting with all relevant role players to ensure that every aspect of this matter is examined carefully and comprehensively,” says Mchunu.
