DURBAN - Politics and crime have been highlighted among the main causes of killings at the KwaMashu hostel.
Community leaders raised this during an imbizo aimed at improving communication between residents and the police.
There's been a spate of killings at the hostel in recent years.
KZN police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said, "a lot of incidents are happening in rural areas not just hostels. We need to put efforts everywhere corner of the province to make sure you stop the killing.in the hostels are surely are not acceptable "
The KwaMashu hostel imbizo has highlighted some of the main causes of the deadly violence in hostels.
Leaders have pointed out politics as a contributing factor.
In February four people were killed and five injured during a mass shooting at KwaMashu hostel. Traditional leaders have condemned the senseless killings.
Police Minister Bheki Cele has thrown his weight behind the community engagements, saying police are looking to use the same formula to fight crime in other provinces.
Cele said, "that is inline with the call that the president has made to say the working relationships between local stations and their communities should be improved."
Following the engagements with the communities, a peace committee will be established that will include izinduna, councillors, police and various other leaders.
