JOHANNESBURG - South Africa's forensic laboratories are completely dysfunctional, with growing backlogs.
Over 36,000 toxicology reports are outstanding at forensic labs in Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban.
This was revealed during a parliamentary inquiry in February.
The reports are critical in investigating suspected poisoning cases and detecting drugs and alcohol.
Health Minister Joe Phaahla blames the backlog on outdated equipment and a shortage of skilled personnel.
The Freedom Front Plus hit out at government, saying it's failed thousands of families.
