Government urged to act after US pulls HIV/AIDS funding

PRETORIA - The SA Medical Association is urging government to act fast, after the US pulled its funding for the country's HIV/Aids programme.

Organisations received notices last week that funding will be halted permanently, as President Donald Trump realigns US priorities.

South Africa is one of the largest beneficiaries of the Emergency Plan for Aids Relief, which contributes around 17 percent to the country's HIV budget.

Chairperson of the SA Medical Association, Dr Mvuyisi Mzukwa says the governemment need to act fast as the cut will put at risk the lives of South Africans living with HIV/Aids and leave organisations vulnerable.

"It will jeopardise lives of millions of South Africans. It will interrupt the managment of TB and HIV in this country," he said.
