GFIS used unlawfully against senior councillors - report

JOHANNESBURG - A report by an official in the Group Forensics and Investigation Services Department has revealed that the unit was used to intimidate senior councillors in the Johannesburg metro.

The report says that GFIS was used to break the law and launch rogue and clandestine investigations against officials and senior councillors.

Johannesburg speaker Colleen Makhubele briefed the media on Thursday.

"The report of the executive mayor came to council after a disclosure dated 24 March 2023 by a certain official of the GFIS department," she said.

"It was received by the current group head of GFIS and in this disclosure the official stated that they were instructed by the former head of the GFIS unit, Mr Sibiya to contravene the law and lodge various rouge and clandestine investigations against senior officials and councillors."
