GBV epidemic | Missing data to blame for low conviction rate

JOHANNESBURG - The SA Medical Research Council says there are significant disparities in reported gender-based violence cases versus actual convictions.

But the council's Naeemah Abrahams, says the situation differs from province to province.

The fourth survey on femicide by the council revealed the severity of the scourge.

The survey looks at the rate of women killed in 2020 and found seven women were killed countrywide every day.

"Eastern Cape overall, has got a much higher level of intimate partner femicide," Abrahams said.

"Then the other province of concern was Gauteng."
