JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng government is working with other partners to address the country's deteriorating road infrastructure.
The province's deteriorating road network is posing a threat to food security in the country.
Provincial Transport Spokesperson, Lesiba Mpya, says officials are taking the province's pothole problem seriously but metros and municipalities need to play their part.
He said, "the Gauteng road infrastructure is worth 34000 km and it is a shared responsibility. What we do as a province is visual inspection and we've our roads infrastructure framework of South Africa, which is RIFSA program, if you out those RIFSA people are on the streets everyday in their orange overalls patching potholes, cutting grass and ensuring that pavements are clean."
"We have a situation where by we make those meaningful interventions. The call that we are making is that municipalities got to play ball, we're happy that the city of Ekurhuleni, City of Joburg and eMfuleni, we're making interventions there."
"These cities that I've mentioned are actually coming to the party, we're calling for the city of Tshwane to work with the province so that we can ultimately sign that memorandum of understanding so that we as a province can have a quick turnaround in terms of collective efforts."
