JOHANNESBURG - The murder rate in Gauteng has risen by three percent in the fourth quarter of 2023 compared to the previous year.
Of the nearly 1,800 people killed, 214 were women and 50 were children.
Gauteng Provincial Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni was briefing the Community Safety Portfolio Committee on crime stats earlier.
"We are deeply worried about other serious crimes that fall under these categories such as murder, attempted murder as well as robbery aggravated as they remain stubbornly high," he said.
"The majority of these crimes are influenced by a wide range of generators."
