JOHANNESBURG - Do police have a firm grip on crime?
Well no, according to two communities in Gauteng who have been battling to stem violence.
Residents of West Village and Westbury say police promises to keep them safe have not materialised.
Last year, eight women were gang-raped in the Krugersdorp mining town, while dozens have been killed in gang-related shootings in Westbury.
And while police have been deployed in both areas, residents say they have failed to curb crime.
The residents have lost hope that the police will assist in bringing down the area's violent crime levels.
