JOHANNESBURG - It's becoming increasingly difficult to rely on the Gauteng Health Department for help in preventing pregnancies.
First, it was a shortage of condoms, now it contraceptive implants.
Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko has confirmed the province is experiencing a shortage of Implanon.

There are currently only 2,000 available in Gauteng, a fraction of the 31,000 needed.
The contraceptive implant works for up to three years.
The department blames the supplier for failing to meet the demand.
