Gas tanker blast leaves several dead in Boksburg

JOHANNESBURG - The death toll from a gas tanker explosion in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg, is not yet known.

Emergency services on the scene say many have died and others have been critically injured.

Some videos show people walking around with burns on their entire bodies.

Tambo Memorial Hospital has been damaged and is not taking patients at this stage.

Houses nearby have also been damaged.

Videos show the driver getting stuck under a low bridge.

Gas could be heard leaking out of the tanker before it exploded.

Emer-G-Med's Kyle van Reenen said the scene looks like a warzone.

"When we arrived on the scene there were fatalities lying several metres from where the explosion took place," he said.

"There are several people with critical burns and injuries."
