JOHANNESBURG - Free State Education MEC Tate Makgoe has died in a car crash near Winburg.
The MEC's official vehicle is said to have collided with three cows.
Makgoe's protector was with him and was also killed. The driver has been rushed to hospital.
Premier Mxolisi Dukwana visited the accident scene.
Makgoe led the Education department to achieve the best matric results in the country for the past four years.
A known education enthusiast, he holds several qualifications, from Chemical Engineering to Commerce and Business Leadership.
The Umkhonto we Sizwe veteran was born Pule Herbert Isak Makgoe in Tumahole in Parys.
He is one of the longest-serving MECs in the province.
