Food safety | NMB reports fraudulent spaza shop registrations

GQEBERHA - Nelson Mandela Bay metro is faced with fraudulent spaza shop registrations.

Some local shop owners renting to foreign nationals say their tenants have gone to register without their consent.

They want to know why the municipality has allowed this without verifying the documents.

Nokuzola Luntonti, a Kwazakhele spaza shop owner has been renting out to a Somali national since 2009.

She says she's been clueless about the whole registration process and only became aware, when her tenant started requesting her personal details and documents.

Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Babalwa Lobishe has confirmed that 338 of 1,637 spaza shop applicants, submitted fraudulent documents.

The mayor says only 594, or 36-percent of 1,637 spaza shops in the metro, have approached the municipality, to apply for a certificate of acceptability.
