CAPE TOWN - Firefighters are battling a raging fire this morning, on the Newlands side of Table Mountain.

The fire flared up on Tuesday in areas inaccessible to ground crews, forcing the deployment of additional aerial resources.

Strong winds have led to the blaze spreading out to other parts of the mountain.

Fire rescue services have been diverted to Tafelberg Road, Red Hill and its surrounding areas and several areas have been closed to the public.

Megan Taplin, Sanparks Park Manager for Table Mountain says authorities are closely monitoring the situation and advised the public to avoid the trails near the areas affected by the fire for their safety.

“We’d like to advise the public of all the trail closures that there are, and to not walk on the trails. It's not good for their own safety and we don't want them to get in the way of firefighter crews trying to do their job", she said.
