CAPE TOWN - Police are investigating the unnatural death of a prisoner at the Goodwood prison in February.
Quinton Fortuin was allegedly involved in a fight with prison warders. However, his lawyer and family are suspicious of the excessive wounds found on his body.
Fortuin's mother came from her home in Mossel Bay to view her son's body and was shocked by what she found.
His lawyer insists there was a cover-up after he asked for video footage of the incident and was told cameras had not been working.
Fortuin's mother acknowledges that her son was no saint, however, he did not deserve to die like this.
She rejected an offer by Correctional Services to bury her son, as she feels this was part of a cover-up.
The Correctional Services department says that an internal investigation is ongoing. Fortuin's cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
The docket is currently with the Senior Public Prosecutor for a decision, but no arrests have been made yet.
