Enyobeni tavern tragedy | Owners to be sentenced on Friday

EAST LONDON - Siyakhangela and Vuyokazi Ndevu may be behind bars by the end of the week.

The couple have been found guilty of selling alcohol to persons under the age of 18.

They are the owners of Enyobeni Tavern where 21 young people died at a party in June 2022.

In delivering his judgment, Magistrate Kevin von Bratt said that there was no evidence to show that Siyakhangela Ndevu was physically selling alcohol to persons under 18.

But given that he and his wife were aware of the liquor laws, it was their responsibility to adhered to them by not allowing children into Enyobeni tavern.

Siyakhangela Ndevu says the judgment proves he and his wife are being used as scapegoats.

Sentencing proceedings will take place on Friday.
