MDANTSANE - The inquest looking into who should be held responsible for the deaths of 21 young people, at Enyobeni Tavern in East London two years ago, is finally underway.
Two witnesses, a police constable stationed in Scenery Park, where the incident occurred, and a young woman who went to the venue moments after the tragic incident, testified.
The former owners of the tavern Siyakhangela and Vuyokazi Ndevu are now representing themselves.
They've told eNCA that they can no longer afford the legal fees.
Siyakhangela Ndevu says his legal costs have amounted to over R400,000 and that's why the couple will not hire a legal representative for the inquest.
Their tavern license has since been suspended following the tragic deaths of 21 young people.
The community of Scenery Park has been calling for the venue, to be turned into a memorial site to preserve the legacy of the victims.
But Siyakhangela Ndevu says he would only consider selling to the highest bidder.
Family members are adamant they will never forgive the Ndevu's, who they accuse of not shown any remorse, for selling alcohol to minors.
The inquest continues on Tuesday.
