EAST LONDON - A year ago, 21 young people left their homes to attend a party at Enyobeni Tavern in the Eastern Cape.
The youngest was just 13.
They had no idea that they’d never make it home.
The reaction was swift from outraged South Africans and families who demanded to know what caused their loved ones’ deaths.
Authorities wasted no time mobilising provincial and national government resources to get to the bottom of what happened.
When the official word finally came through, it sparked fresh confusion for parents who were told that traces of methanol had been detected in the dead bodies.
And then the Eastern Cape Health Department confirmed the victims had, in fact, suffocated to death.
This brought little comfort to the families who demanded accountability.
