JOHANNESBURG - Avoidable and symptomatic of a nationwide collapse: the Scientific Advisory Group on Emergencies - a group of 15 senior academic experts - says the current cholera outbreak could be a precursor to even bigger crises.
They've urged government to implement a series of urgent measures, including the takeover of dysfunctional municipal water treatment works.
Member of the group, Prof Leslie Petrik from the University of the Western Cape, says that the country's water treatment plants have seen the same level of neglect as the country's power plants.
