Electoral Amendment Bill | Groups threaten court challenge

JOHANNESBURG - Elections expert Terry Tselane says there is inconsistency with the way independent electoral candidates are being treated.

President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the Electoral Amendment Bill into law, paving the way for independent candidates to contest positions in the National Assembly and provincial legislatures.

The political think tank The Rivonia Circle has called his action "a travesty of justice", and is threatening a court challenge.

The amendment requires that independent candidates meet certain requirements.

Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi will now have to establish the Electoral Reform Consultation panel within four months of gazetting the amendments.
