JOHANNESBURG - Easter is meant to be a time of joy, but in South Africa we are used to it marking a period of mourning.
Long-distance travel as people return home or go on pilgrimage leads to high road death tolls.
Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga is launching the Easter road safety campaign on Wednesday.
It's hoped greater police visibility will reduce the number of fatalities.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation says it will focus on high-volume routes.
"The highest provinces would be Gauteng, Limpopo, KwaZulu Natal, the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape," said Simon Zwane.
"Those are our priority provinces that will be focusing on."
