E-hailing and minibus taxi drivers meet

JOHANNESBURG - Illegal e-hailing drivers and permit holders continue undermining the work done and progress made by the minibus taxi industry according to E-Hailing Association spokesperson, Vhatuka Mbelengwa.

He says some drivers operate using expired application slips while awaiting approval from service providers.

Mbelengwa says government must do more to establish a permit system which will keep track of all drivers.

He said, "many people within are operating with a slip to prove that they’ve applied for a permit which has never come."

"Some of these slips are over seven-years-old waiting for feedback from departments….It goes back to government to say they need to regulate and put a permitting regime in place so that we can identify legitimate operators."

"What we’ve come to understand about people queuing at malls, they are not operating legally. The use the app to do a price estimate then use this to negotiate prices with customers."

"This process in turn undermines the traditional minibus taxi industry."
