Discussion | Police officers arrested for hijacking

JOHANNESBURG - Crime in South Africa is at an all-time high, prompting police and Home Affairs to roll out several initiatives to curb criminality.

But what happens when those entrusted to protect us commit crimes?

Anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee says there are two types of criminal groups.

The first group is known as the blue light gangs, these are thugs who dress like real cops only to stop cars to rob drivers.

While the second group includes rogue metro police officers who allegedly stop motorists only to hijack their cars.

Abramjee noted this pattern and condemned it.

To date, four police officers have been arrested for allegedly hijacking trucks along the N3 highway in Gauteng.

He said the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) must ensure these officers are held accountable.

In the meantime, Abramjee gave motorists advice.

  • If an unmarked car with blue lights tries to stop you, slow down, put on your hazards, and drive to a safe public place like a petrol station before stopping.
  • If it’s real police, but you are suspicious, comply but use your car’s emergency button.
