Discussion | Farmers welcome the heavy rain

JOHANNESBURG - The heavy rains that have devastated parts of the country have also done good for farmers.

Crops and grazing fields for livestock are benefiting from the wetter conditions.

Where feed costs are high, improved grazing conditions offer some respite to commercial farmers and significantly aid smallholder farmers.

Agricultural economist Wandile Sihlobo this would have a positive impact on grain production resulting in an increase of 18% from last year with a harvest of just over 17 million tons.

This production could also lead to prices easing.

"We are already seeing prices moderating. I sense that as things progress in the next coming months this harvest may be revised before what we are looking at now," he said.
