Discussion | Death toll following Mozambique mass protests rises

MAPUTO - Three people were killed in clashes between demonstrators and police in Mozambique yesterday.

That’s according to Maputo Central Hospital.

That brings to at least 21 the number of people killed in protests since the elections a month ago.

Frelimo has ruled Mozambique since 1975. And the party’s Daniel Chapo won the election, with 71 percent of the vote, according to the electoral commission. 

The main opposition candidate, Venancio Mondlane came in second with 20 percent. But several groups have denounced the polls as rigged, and Mondlane called for a mass protest yesterday.

Professor Adriano Nuvunga, who is Director at the Centre for Democracy and Human Rights in Mozambique spoke to eNCA.
