Digital migration | Two-step approach adopted for analogue TV switch off

JOHANNESBURG - Communications and Digital Technologies Minister, Mondli Gungubele, says a two-step approach to switching off analogue signals has been adopted.

He confirmed this during a media briefing on the progress of the implementation of the Broadcast Digital Migration programme.

This follows consultations with industry players and the Independent Communications Authority of SA.

WATCH: Judgment expected in analogue switch-off matter

He says the first analogue switch-off will be effective on 31 July 2023, depending on the size of the Megahertz.

The final switch-off date is set for 31 December 2024.

Gungubele said, ''Having consolidated broadcasting digital migration objectives, we're resolved to adopt a two-step approach as follows: step one immediately switches off analogue services above 694 MHz band to release spectrum for other telecommunication use and set date is 31 July 2023."

"Step two temporarily accommodates some of the high populace areas, below 694 MHz and switch off within a given period and the step aside date for this step is 31st December 2024. A two-step approach to analogue switch off is deemed to be a viable approach to the industry."

"This approach is accepted to be a win-win approach that will enable analogue switch off progress, release spectrum, and allow key stakeholders to recover from post-COVID economic decline and load shedding impact."
