JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Police Commissioner Elias Mawela says one of the major problems facing Diepsloot is undocumented migrants.
Mawela says they often illegally occupy land and houses and he is urging police to tackle the issue.
Residents in the area have been protesting over numerous issues, including a lack of police visibility in the area.
He said, "Gauteng is a province like no other, mainly because of its economic strength. This impacts its attractiveness to migrants. This is what the community of Diepsloot are complaining about that there’s lots of undocumented persons some have occupied open spaces, they have put shacks there… when people moved from Adelaide Tambo to Riversand, this undocumented persons occupied that space. We are seated with a problem in our hands.”
