Deputy Public Works Minister launches operation to reclaim hijacked buildings

JOHANNESBURG - The hijacking of buildings has become a challenge for South Africa.

Criminal syndicates continue to take over mostly unused government buildings for their own ends.

Mthatha in the Eastern Cape is one of the hardest hit towns, with buildings hijacked by criminals and occupied by destitute people.

The provincial government says 82 properties are currently following legal processes and 57 eviction orders have been issued.

Deputy Public Works Minister, Sihle Zikalala embarked on Operation Bring Back together with the provincial government in an effort to reclaim illegally occupied buildings.
