PORT ST JOHNS - A police officer has been shot dead in Port St Johns in the Eastern Cape.
Vuyolethu Madala, who was off-duty, had visited a store when suspects opened fire on him.
He was rushed to a nearby clinic but died on arrival.
Police are investigating a case of murder. The motive for the killing is unknown.
In a separate incident, another officer was attacked with a hammer on her way to work in Makhanda.
Police say way the attacker was her ex-boyfriend.
When the officer tried to escape, the suspect drew a gun and shot at her.
The officer is in hospital with serious injuries.
Police launched a manhunt and found the suspect dead. He allegedly killed himself.
Acting provincial police commissioner, Zithulele Dladla has condemned the attacks.
