JOHANNESBURG - Johannesburg continues to have the highest crime rate in Gauteng, accounting for 36 percent of all reported cases.
Provincial Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni delivered these findings to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature's Public Safety Committee on Friday.
The committee welcomed efforts to curb crime in the fiscal year 2024/2025, but says it's concerned about the rise of gangsterism and gun violence in most metropolitan areas.
Gauteng Provincial Legislature Chairperson, Dulton Adams, says police resources must be used more efficiently to address the crisis.

Some committee members feel that there should be stricter efforts to curb gun violence in communities.
The committee has however praised the police department for its successful anti-crime operations.
However, calls for more emphasis on emerging crime patterns and high crime regions are growing.
