GQEBERHA - The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) is urging SAPS members to be more vigilant and try and work in larger groups.
This follows a recent spate of police killings.
At least 12 officers have been killed nationally over the course of this year.
But in the Eastern Cape, the situation is even deadlier.
In the past year, seven officers have been murdered.
Most recently, this number's risen to ten after three on-duty cops were killed within a single week.
SAPS bosses say they are angered by the senseless killing as the alleged perpetrator committed the crime while he was on parole.
