JOHANNESBURG - President Cyril Ramaphosa has authorised the deployment of nearly 900 South African National Defence Force members to protect Eskom power stations around the country.
The President has informed National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa- Nqakula and NCOP Chairperson Amos Masondo of this decision.
The army will help police prevent sabotage, theft and other crimes that may threaten the functioning of power stations, and interrupt the supply of electricity.
The current deployment from 17 April 2023 to 17 October this year, follows that of 2,700 soldiers who were in place under Operation Prosper, which ended in mid-April.
This will cost just over R146-million.
