JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng crime levels have reached crisis levels as those seeking economic opportunities flock to the province.
The ratio between police and residents makes it near impossible for police to cover every corner.
The latest crime stats show a 2.6 percent decline, but it remains high compared to other provinces.
Specialist investigator Mike Bolhuis said the crime statistics are misleading.
He said the true numbers are likely far worse.
Bolhuis said reports on the ground show an increase, while the figures point to a decrease.
"My concern is the poor. The rich can afford it [security] and it's put a serious strain on our economy because each of these houses or businesses must get in extra money and it all has an effect on the economy," Bolhuis said.
