Court to rule on death of anti-apartheid activist Imam Abdullah Haron

CAP TOWN - The Western Cape High Court is expected to rule on the death of anti-apartheid activist Imam Abdullah Haron.

It will pronounce whether he was killed by apartheid police or if he died accidentally.

The Islamic scholar died while in police custody in September 1969.

An inquest in 1970 ruled that he sustained fatal injuries after falling down a flight of stairs.

The family challenged the findings, believing he was tortured while in solitary confinement.

Last year, the Justice Minister requested that the inquest be re-opened.
