CAPE TOWN - The country's prisons are seriously overcrowded.
At last count, we had an inmate population of 167, 300 but only 107,000 available beds.
And according to authorities this was as a direct result of inmates who are unable to pay bail,
state patients who were yet to be moved to mental institutions, and a high number of foreign nationals behind bars.

But these numbers could actually be much worse.
The Portfolio Committee on Correctional Services recently received updated numbers.
Chairperson Kgomotso Ramolobeng, spoke to eNCA.
