Concern over food safety contuninues as spaza shop deadine looms

CAPE TOWN - As the 2025 school year is well on its way concern over the children who died last year after eating poisoned food are still rife.

More than 20 children died after eating poisoned food, that was bought from local spaza shops while hundreds others were hospitalised and treated.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced an intervention strategy which included the registration of all spaza shops.

This deadline has since extended to the end of February.

On Monday eNCA spoke to Rosheda Muller from the National Informal Traders Alliance of SA for an update on the process.

She said there is a slow pace of work being executed to get every spaza shop and food handling businesses registered.
